The difference between accounting and bookkeeping
Many people use "accounting" and "bookkeeping" interchangeably, but they describe different things. Bookkeeping is the ongoing registration of business transactions (vouchers, customer and supplier invoices, receipts, payslips and bank events) and is governed primarily by Swedish bookkeeping law, bokföringslagen. Accounting is a broader term. In addition to bookkeeping it covers reconciliations, accruals, year-end closings, the annual report, tax and VAT filings, and the reporting that informs management and owner decisions.
For a smaller Stockholm company, monthly bookkeeping and a year-end close may be enough. As the business grows with more employees, more transactions and several entities in a group structure, you usually need quarterly reporting, budgets and forecasts, project or cost-center tracking and a closer dialogue with advisors.
